The mind has a thousand paths it might go, yet I stroll in peace on this lovely route.

The wind stirs with every stride.

Every step leads to a flower opening. ~Thich Nhat Nanh

When things are going well in your life and the sun is shining, it’s simple to feel content and optimistic.

When you’re ill, alone, terrified, or so exhausted that you can’t even bring yourself to get out of bed in the morning, it’s a different story.

I have three cancer survivors under my belt, so I know a little bit about enduring hardship.

I have experienced feelings of exhaustion and hopelessness, but I have also discovered that even in the most trying situations, there can be moments of serenity and brightness.

It’s possible for you too.

These six strategies enable me to see the bright side of things when they’re dark.

I hope they provide you the same tranquility and comfort that they provide for me.

Give Up Acting as if Nothing is Wrong

Recognize when things aren’t going smoothly.

Give up criticizing yourself if you’re feeling drained, nervous, or unhappy.

Consider speaking to yourself with the same compassion and respect that you would provide to your friends and family in the event of tragedy or difficulty, rather than criticizing yourself for not being optimistic.

Remind yourself that emotions are cyclical and that you have every right to feel the way you do at this moment.

They arrive and go.

You’re tough too, even if things are hard right now.

You’ve had difficult moments in the past.

You’ll overcome this, and the day will improve for you tomorrow.

Make the Choice to Live Each Hour of Each Day

During my breast cancer chemotherapy, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to endure the intense six-month course of treatment.

Everything changed when I discovered the concept of living each hour of my life.

This is how it operates:

Let’s assume that where you are, it is 1:15 p.m.

Your only task is to concentrate on working as hard as you can till 2:00 p.m.

That is all.

You don’t need to bother about planning tomorrow night’s meal.

You won’t be worrying about how you’re going to replace your old automobile or about your Tuesday appointment.

All you have to do is get through this one hour, certain that the next and every hour after that will take care of itself.

It may seem easy, but leading this kind of life has helped me get through some extremely trying times.

Try it now and see if just one adjustment may help ease the strain of this difficult moment.

Put Your Love for Yourself First

Now is the moment to practice strong, loving self-care for your body and soul.

Pay attention to what your body requires in order to remain healthy.

Ensure that you receive enough sleep.

Get into bed early.

Have a snooze.

Spend the day doing something heart-soothing.

Take a stroll in the forest, visit the shore, or curl up with a nice book.

Eat as much as you can, but don’t punish yourself if you skip a veggie or indulge in a piece of chocolate too much.

Make movements that your body finds comfortable.

And make as many moves as you can.

You may elevate your mood with even a ten-minute stroll or some light stretching.

Throughout the day, surround yourself with loving words and deeds to support your health and soul.

Throughout the day, keep in mind all the reasons and opportunities you have to enjoy who you are.

Taking a warm bath or shower is my go-to self-care method when times are hard.

I like spending time alone myself to take care of my body and soul.

I like unwinding and letting my troubles and anxieties slip away into the sea.

Bathing is, for me, the ideal way to unwind after a challenging day.

Get Occupied

Take action instead than merely sitting around worrying.

You may still find a tiny way to improve your life, even if you don’t have much energy.

Tidy a closet or a drawer.

Go through a book.

Acquire knowledge.

Begin and complete a project.

Create, write, explore, tinker, knit, build, garden, donate, and share.

It doesn’t matter what you do; I prefer to take walks or go into the kitchen to cook.

It important that you make at least one little change to put yourself back on the path to recovery.

Express Gratitude

Spend a little time each day appreciating all the good things you already have in your life.

I can assure you that despite your perception that you have nothing to be thankful for, there are many marvels all around you.

The secret is to look for the little pleasures in life, the happy accidents that happen to you, and the subtleties of color, music, and surroundings.

Locate them, and then joyfully celebrate each and every one of them.

Look for things that make you feel happy as you go about your day.

Savor the little pleasures in life, such as the crisp apple’s luscious taste, the beauty of the morning sky, the rhythm of your favorite music, and the warmth and comfort of a duvet over your shoulders.

Count the number of these amazing items you can locate.

Make it a challenge to locate more of those items than you did the day before.

Play the game with others in your immediate vicinity to see how this one easy action transforms your life.

If you’re still struggling to think of positive aspects of your life, fill in these sentences:

  • I like to watch…

  • I like to hear that.

  • I like to do this.

  • I take pleasure in knowing.

  • Spending time with…

  • I’m overjoyed about.

  • I cherish….

  • I’m quite happy that I can.

  • I’m appreciative of…

  • I am excited about…

You’ll start to attract more of those amazing things into your life when you start focusing on and discussing the things you have to be thankful for.

Breathe and Raise Your Gaze

Ultimately, all it takes to feel better right away whether you’re stressed, unhappy, or at your wits’ end is to glance up.

Just lift your eyes to the ceiling, the sky, or anything above your head.

Feel a connection to the cosmos for a minute.

Next, inhale deeply into your abdomen.

Feel a sensation of relaxation start in your shoulders and go down your spine as you continue to breathe deeply.

Your body begins to feel at peace as your muscles begin to loosen.

Repeat “I now fill my body with peace and light” with each next breath.

Feel your body soften and unwind as you release the breath, and tell yourself again, “I let go of the weight of fear and worry.”

Continue until you feel at ease all the way.

Then, as you go about your day, remember that you can use this approach again and again to instill a feeling of calm in your heart regardless of what is happening in the world.

Even if you can’t always escape bad days, you can always choose acceptance, appreciation, attention, and love to help bring some light and calm into your spirit during such times.
