Oh, Lisbon!
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably dreamt of working in a city with the perfect balance of history, culture, and laid-back vibes.
Well, let me tell you, Lisbon might just be that dream come true.
I’ve been wandering the globe, hopping from one digital nomad hotspot to another, and there’s something magical about Lisbon that I just can’t shake off.
I mean, what’s not to love?
The sun shines most of the year, there’s a cozy café on nearly every corner, and the locals are some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met.
Whether we’re looking for coworking spaces, vibrant street life, or some after-work adventures, Lisbon has it all.
So let’s dive into what makes this city such a gem for us digital nomads!
The Vibe: A City That Breathes Creativity and Charm
The first thing that hit me when I arrived in Lisbon was how relaxed and welcoming it felt.
You know when you walk through a city, and it just feels like you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be?
That’s Lisbon.
The cobbled streets, colorful tiles, and charming old trams make every turn feel like a postcard moment.
But don’t let the old-world charm fool you!
Lisbon is buzzing with creative energy.
There’s a growing community of freelancers, entrepreneurs, and remote workers here.
I think it’s because the city inspires you.
Every café is full of people typing away on laptops, working on the next big project, and you can’t help but want to join in.
Coworking Spaces in Lisbon: Where We Get Stuff Done
Let’s talk about where we’ll actually get our work done.
Sure, we love to explore, but we’ve also got deadlines to meet and clients to impress.
Thankfully, Lisbon has no shortage of fantastic coworking spaces that cater to digital nomads like us.
One of my absolute favorites is Second Home Lisbon.
Located in the iconic Mercado da Ribeira, it’s more than just a workspace—it feels like a creative hub.
The space is filled with plants, natural light, and vibrant energy.
Plus, it’s perfect for networking.
Whether you’re looking to collaborate with a fellow nomad or need some inspiration, this is the place to be.
Then there’s Heden, a cozy spot nestled in the historic center.
It’s a bit more low-key but super trendy, with a relaxed vibe that’s ideal for focusing.
And for us digital nomads, the bonus is that Heden offers flexible day passes.
So, if we’re only in Lisbon for a short stint, we can still take advantage of the space without committing to long-term contracts.
But if you’re like me, some days, you just want to park yourself in a cool café and let the work flow with a strong espresso by your side. Café da Garagem is a hidden gem—part café, part theater.
It has breathtaking views of the city and offers a peaceful atmosphere to knock out those to-do lists.
Another great café is Hello, Kristof—a minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired space that’s always buzzing with freelancers and digital nomads, so you’ll feel right at home.
Internet: No More Buffering Woes
Let’s face it: solid internet is non-negotiable when you’re a digital nomad.
There’s nothing worse than hopping on a Zoom call only to have it drop because the Wi-Fi can’t handle it.
But Lisbon?
Lisbon’s got our backs.
The city is very well connected, and I’ve had little to no issues finding fast, reliable internet.
Most coworking spaces, cafés, and even Airbnb rentals come with speedy Wi-Fi.
I don’t know about you, but the peace of mind that comes with knowing I can work without buffering screens is a huge plus for me.
We can have our video conferences and download big files without breaking a sweat!
Living the Good Life: Cost of Living in Lisbon
One of the reasons Lisbon is such a fantastic digital nomad destination is the relatively affordable cost of living, especially for a European capital.
I’m always on the lookout for places that won’t drain my bank account, and Lisbon offers us that perfect balance of affordable comfort without compromising on the good things in life.
Let’s break it down.
Renting a one-bedroom apartment in central neighborhoods like Bairro Alto or Alfama will cost around €700 to €1,200 per month, depending on the season and the location.
If you’re okay with being a little farther out, like in Amadora or Sintra, the prices drop even more.
Plus, public transport is super affordable, with a monthly pass for the metro and buses costing around €40.
Eating out in Lisbon is a treat.
We can grab a menu do dia (the daily special) at most local restaurants for about €10, which usually includes a starter, main course, dessert, and coffee.
And don’t even get me started on the pastéis de nata (those delicious custard tarts).
They’re dangerously cheap, around €1 each, and you’ll find them everywhere!
Lisbon’s Digital Nomad Community: Ready to Make Friends?
I’ll admit, one of the best parts about being a digital nomad is meeting new people.
Sure, I love the freedom of working solo, but sometimes, you just want to grab a drink with someone who gets it, right?
Well, Lisbon’s digital nomad community is thriving, and it’s one of the most welcoming I’ve ever encountered.
We can easily plug into the scene by joining one of the many Meetup.com groups or Facebook communities dedicated to remote workers in Lisbon.
There are regular events, from casual coffee meetups to entrepreneurial workshops.
One of the standout events is the Lisbon Digital Nomads Meetup, which happens every week.
It’s a super laid-back way to meet other travelers and freelancers, share tips, and maybe even find a new project or collaboration.
I’ve also heard great things about Lisbon Remote Workers on Facebook.
The group is super active, and it’s filled with expats and nomads who are more than happy to share advice, apartment listings, or just grab a drink after a long workday.
It’s the kind of community that makes you feel like you’ve got instant friends the moment you arrive.
After Work Fun: What Do We Do Once We Close the Laptop?
Let’s talk about the fun stuff!
Because yes, we work hard, but we also know how to have fun.
And Lisbon has endless options for when we want to unwind after a productive day.
First things first—Miradouros.
Lisbon is known for its scenic viewpoints, or miradouros, where we can take in stunning views of the city and the river below.
One of my favorites is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte.
It’s a bit of a climb to get there, but oh man, the views are worth it.
There’s nothing like grabbing a cold drink, sitting on the steps, and watching the sunset after a long day of work.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, Lisbon is surrounded by incredible nature.
We can easily hop on a train and head to Cascais, a beautiful coastal town just 30 minutes away.
Spend the day soaking up the sun at the beach or exploring the cobblestone streets—Cascais is like a mini paradise.
Or, for those of us who love hiking, the Sintra mountains are just a short train ride away.
We can explore ancient palaces, lush gardens, and secret trails that make it feel like we’ve stepped into a fairy tale.
And, of course, we can’t forget about the nightlife.
Lisbon comes alive after dark, and it’s got something for everyone.
Whether we’re into sipping cocktails on a rooftop bar, dancing the night away in Bairro Alto, or catching live music in Alfama, there’s always something happening.
Food, Glorious Food: Lisbon’s Culinary Delights
I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite things about traveling is the food.
And Lisbon?
Let’s just say my taste buds have been very happy here.
We can’t talk about Lisbon without mentioning bacalhau, the traditional salted cod dish that’s a staple in Portuguese cuisine.
There are literally hundreds of ways to prepare it, but my go-to is bacalhau à Brás—a comforting dish made with shredded cod, onions, and crispy potatoes, all bound together with scrambled eggs.
It’s heaven on a plate.
Then there’s the seafood.
Lisbon’s coastal location means the seafood here is fresh and abundant.
Whether we’re in the mood for grilled sardines, octopus salad, or some delicious prawns, there’s a seafood dish for every occasion.
And don’t worry, Lisbon has plenty of international cuisine options too.
From vegan-friendly spots like Ao 26 – Vegan Food Project to trendy food markets like Time Out Market, where we can sample food from some of the city’s top chefs, Lisbon has something for every palate.
Getting Around: Exploring Lisbon Like a Local
One of the things I love most about Lisbon is how easy it is to get around.
Whether we’re zipping through the city on a tram, taking a scenic walk along the river, or hopping on the metro, Lisbon’s public transport system is super efficient.
The trams are iconic, and while they’re popular with tourists, they’re also a great way to get around. Tram 28 is the most famous, taking us through the historic neighborhoods of Graça, Alfama, and Baixa.
It’s the perfect way to get a feel for the city while also giving our feet a little rest!
The Lisbon Metro is fast, affordable, and easy to navigate.
Plus, it connects most of the major neighborhoods, so we can get from point A to point B without any hassle.
If we’re staying longer, grabbing a Viva Viagem card is a good idea, as it offers discounted fares for regular commuters.
Conclusion: Why Lisbon Is Calling Us
Lisbon has quickly become one of my favorite cities to live and work in as a digital nomad, and I think you’ll fall in love with it too.
It’s the perfect blend of laid-back charm and bustling energy, with a strong community of remote workers and a creative spirit that makes it hard not to feel inspired.
From the sunny weather and affordable cost of living to the coworking spaces, café culture, and endless opportunities for after-work fun, Lisbon really does have it all.
