A buddy of mine asked me why I didn’t simply join the gym as I was driving to meet him at the YMCA.
I said that I practiced yoga and sometimes calisthenics at home for my workouts and didn’t see the need to pay for a gym membership.
He seemed to understand.
It was anticipated that his reaction would be: “Yoga, isn’t that merely stretching?”
As I grinned, I explained to him the concept of this piece and how it related to his previous experience.
For those who don’t know, I informed him that yoga is much more than simply stretching and getting into purportedly awkward-looking postures and positions; it is a way of life.
You’ll do stretching and breathing exercises as well as meditation and healthy eating, as well as other things.
Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj”, which means to yoke or bind, and is typically regarded as a “union” or a system of discipline, among other things.
Its ultimate objective is the unification of man with God or with the whole cosmos in a single exhalation of air.
Furthermore, it aspires to free the spirit since both the intellect and the spirit are engaged in its practice to the same extent.
Yoga is, without a doubt, the oldest physical-cultural system still in existence on the planet.
Beyond being a scientifically established method of achieving physical fitness, it also helps to prevent the onset of aging by revitalizing and improving the look of the skin, keeping it supple and increasing energy, as well as the creative side of one’s personality.
As a result of its fundamental warm-up exercises known as the Sun Salutations (which are similar to the calisthenics exercise known as burpees), its inversion poses, forward and backward bending poses, arm balancing exercises, as well as its ability to increase focus, even the most casual practitioner will attest to the fact that yoga can stand on its own when it comes to achieving physical fitness.
Do you believe that yoga cannot assist in the development of strength?
Reconsider your position.
Heck, I defy even the most accomplished bodybuilder to maintain the basic but strong peacock posture for an uninterrupted 90 seconds.
I’m willing to bet they’d collapse half-way through the execution if they made it that far.
Yoga also provides unique breathing exercises that are beneficial for patients with respiratory disorders, as well as singers and public speakers.
Furthermore, with its unique relaxation pose, which is frequently practiced during and after its execution, yoga provides a systematic means of deeply relaxing the entire body, perhaps in a way that no other exercise can match or even come close to.
Note that some of the positions provide a thorough body massage similar to those obtained in salons; I just thought I’d mention that in case anybody was interested.
With a plethora of books, DVDs, videos, and classes available for people of all ages, fitness levels, and levels of experience (some of which are actually free for the first couple of lessons to try yoga out).
I recommend that you give it a try and see what it can do for you.
It’s worth a shot, I promise.
One thing I guarantee you is that you will walk out of your yoga session with a smile on your face, acknowledging that yoga is much more than just stretching.
It is the most important workout.
