Lately, I purchased a running watch and have been focusing on maintaining a specific heart rate during my runs to improve my aerobic fitness through slow running.
My running speed has been unusually sluggish for the past month.
It has reignited my passion for running.
I’ll provide more details on that, but it’s making me think about a broader idea: taking things slow can make us appreciate anything if we allow it.
Allow me to provide you with a couple of illustrations:
Music is a common companion as we navigate our daily routines, whether we’re on the move, working, or tidying up.
There is a delightful joy in simply sitting back and listening to a full album, like we did in the past, just savoring the music without any distractions.
Work is frequently associated with negative connotations, as it may seem burdensome, overwhelming, and exhausting.
We must motivate ourselves to complete tasks.
Slowing down with our tasks, creating space, and fully immersing ourselves in each activity can truly transform the experience.
It exudes a sense of grandeur and opulence.
Mealtime: Often, we hastily eat while multitasking, whether it’s checking our phones, watching TV, or working.
It can be challenging to fully appreciate the food when we’re not fully engaged, as it may lack flavor.
Slowing down and savoring our food for just 5–10 minutes can be a truly delightful experience.
Enjoy and appreciate this nourishing and beautiful meal in front of us.
Walking: Typically, when we walk, we are usually in a rush to reach our destination (at least, I am).
When we go for a walk to get some exercise, we like to listen to music or a podcast so we can enjoy the walk without focusing too much on it.
Slowing down and savoring the journey, even if it’s just a means to an end, can be truly transformative.
Appreciate the outdoors, savor the brief transitions from one location to another, relish the gaps between destinations, and delight in the physical act of moving through space.
Undoubtedly, this concept can be extended to various other scenarios, not limited to the ones mentioned.
Engaging in reading, physical activity, fostering connections, enjoying tea, and following a nighttime routine.
Returning to the joy of running is essential before discussing how to rediscover that love by slowing down.
Slowing My Pace: Key to Rediscovering My Passion for Running
Once more, I came across several articles and a book titled 80/20 Running that motivated me to adjust my running speed to a relaxed conversational pace.
My running pace decreased significantly, which enabled me to extend both the distance and duration of my runs without feeling overly fatigued or risking injury.
I have incorporated running into my daily routine.
These extended, leisurely runs provided a space for me to reestablish a connection with myself.
At times, I choose to play an audiobook or listen to an album.
At times, I simply savor the outdoors, moving at a more leisurely speed.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I began to anticipate my daily runs!
Instead of this challenging, exhausting workout that I would have to conquer, it evolved into a sanctuary of tranquility and fun.
Slowing down presents its own set of challenges (I sometimes feel like I’m not moving fast enough), but it also brings unexpected pleasures.
After a few weeks of this, I came to the realization that I had rediscovered my passion for running after ten years.

How can we incorporate this approach into various aspects of our lives, not just running?
Beginning The Way of Slowing Down involves starting with the simple act of setting an intention to slow down.
I chose to pursue running because I firmly believed in its advantages.
