Astrology: What is Astrology And How Does It Work?
Daylight has passed.
The sun has crept from the sky and cleared a path for the moon and stars to reveal themselves in this vast expanse we call the night sky.
It’s a clear night and you look deep into the blanket of darkness above and feel this pull from the stars, which probes the question “what does this all mean”?
You can feel it, that knowing, deep within yourself that there must be more to it than sparkling orbs of light that grace us in our skies.
Trust it, this knowing, because it speaks truths.
It tells you to search the answers out, and you do.
You pick up this mystical device and decide to… to… Google it… for Google knows all.
What is Astrology? What Are Astrology Signs?
So here we are questioning what on Earth (or should I say Cosmos) is Astrology?!
Astrology is the study of the movement and positioning of celestial bodies (think Sun, Moon, Venus, Saturn, stars, etc) which consists of a system of horoscopes.
These different horoscopes (depending on when or where you were born) will help explain certain aspects of your personality and even predict future events.
For those who are very new to this school of thought, you might be thinking how does our date of birth, being Earth dwellers and far from the stars, dictate our astrological signs?
Well, it all depends on the positing of each celestial body in each zodiac sign at the moment you were born.
So this means you don’t just have one astrology sign… no!
In fact, you are made of several that coexist within you, which helps create the individual that is you.
But if you were to ask “what Zodiac sign am I?” the answer would be referring to your sun sign, not your star sign, as it is commonly called.
I know, it seems a little misleading.
What Are The Astrology Answers You Are Seeking?
Many of us look to the stars for astrology answers to questions we might have about our lives, both present or future.
You might want to know which areas of your life will see fortune in the short term, like your career, finances, or family life.
Maybe you have met a new partner and are wondering, what is my zodiac signs compatibility?
Or something as simple as what is my horoscope tomorrow?
There are many questions that reading into your own astrology can answer, or to at least act as a gentle guide towards your destiny.
It could even help you understand a loved one better by researching their astrology chart.
Different astrological signs have different characteristics and personality traits which means when two differing signs meet, the dynamics of the relationship have the potential to be either a passionate love affair or turn cold as ice.
The same goes for family members, friends, and even work colleagues or bosses.
We are drawn to specific zodiac signs.
Test it out.
Ask your inner circle what their sun signs are.
You probably attract a certain sign more than others or a particular elemental sign.
E.g. earth, fire, water, or air… we will get onto that later.
Astrology: Science Or Pseudoscience?
You might still be questioning the validity of such a study.
Where are the results of long laborious studies of astrology and their correlation to people’s identity or compatibility?
Well, the scientific community is in the current opinion that astrology and the zodiac are in fact a pseudoscience.
The belief systems that surround it are thought to be factual and scientific but are found to be unsupported by scientific methods.
So, these studies that have been developed over centuries by astronomers, astrologists, our own ancestors, and spiritualists are not considered a science.
Why?
Because our post-modern school of rational thought needs actual scientific evidence to prove yes-or-no through numerical data.
But how can you quantify your personality?
Not so easy to prove, right?
A lot of the key differences between a science and a pseudoscience is an element of philosophy; it triggers fundamental questions of who and what we are.
Questions that, no matter how much we study or test, cannot be proven through scientific methodology.
What Is My Zodiac Sign?
So you might now be asking “What zodiac sign am I?”.
As I previously mentioned, when asked this, a person is usually referring to your sun sign.
So this means, the zodiac house that the sun was in at the moment you were born.
Those of us who are students of astrology signs will understand this in terms of birth dates.
E.g.
I was born on the 15th of January, therefore, I am a Capricorn.
Experts of astrology will understand this in terms of celestial longitude and other mathematical mumbo-jumbo.
For E.g.
Capricorn is 270 degrees to 300 degrees.
Each sign is then assigned to an element; earth, fire, air, or water, which are also indicators of personality traits.
These also have their own polarities.
Water and earth signs are considered negative, female, and introverted.
Water signs being emotional, empathetic, and sensitive: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.
Earth signs being practical, more materialistic, or cautious: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.
Fire and air signs are considered positive, male, and extroverted.
Fire signs being enthusiastic, expressive, and faithful: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.
Air signs being communicative, social, and conceptual: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.
A deeper understanding of what your zodiac sign is, or which astrological signs you have can be found by searching your natal chart.
The signs also manifest themselves as three different forms of modality: cardinal, fixed, or mutable.
Cardinal signs are Aries, cancer, libra, and Capricorn: they are active, dynamic, and initiative.
Fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius: they are resistant to change and inflexible.
Mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces: they are adaptable, flexible and resourceful.
So… each sign has an element and a modality: e.g.
I am Capricorn, therefore I am an Earth and Cardinal sign.
These elements will help build a picture of what your sign really says about you.
The 12 Zodiac And Astrology Signs

Once you have grasped the concept of horoscopes and astrological signs, you can move into the rest of the field of the astrological calendar, the 12 houses that build each person’s natal chart.
In fact, there is a 13th Zodiac sign called Ophiuchus, this sign falls between November 29th and December 18th… and potentially shifts every single other astrology sign out of kilter.
So maybe stick to the 12 zodiac signs, to begin with.
Once you are comfortable, you can then delve into the more complex and controversial areas of astrology.
