Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Libra
Best Matches: Leo, Sagittarius, Libra, and Gemini
Worst Matches: Taurus, Cancer, and Capricorn
Aries is by nature a fighter.
This sign thrives on adventure and conflict.
Aries wants a relationship that will bring excitement and likes to argue.
This means that even the most compatible combinations for Aries will involve at least some volatility.
Taurus Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Scorpio
Best Matches: Capricorn, Cancer, Virgo, and Scorpio
Worst Matches: Sagittarius, Gemini, and Aries
Taurus is steady and stable.
This sign is also highly domestic.
In general, Taurus enjoys relationships and is highly sensuous.
Yet, Taurus has a low activity level and prefers to stay home rather than go out.
Taurus is also highly possessive and jealous, which can negatively impact relationships.
Gemini Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Sagittarius
Best Matches: Libra, Leo, Aquarius, and Aries
Worst Matches: Scorpio, Taurus, and Pisces
Gemini is cheerful, friendly, and easy-going.
This sign can go with the flow and adapt to almost anyone or anything.
Yet, Gemini is easily bored and can quickly lose interest in a relationship.
This can make it hard for Gemini natives to have lasting partnerships.
Cancer Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Capricorn
Best Matches: Pisces, Taurus, Scorpio, and Virgo
Worst Matches: Aquarius, Leo, Aries and Libra
Cancer is a natural parent and caregiver.
This sign thrives in a domestic setting and is completely devoted to a partner.
On the other hand, Cancer can also be quite moody, and not every sign wants the kind of life that Cancer dreams of.
Leo Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Aquarius
Best Matches: Libra, Aries, Sagittarius, and Gemini
Worst Matches: Virgo, Cancer, Capricorn, and Pisces
Leo is a bright, shining star, who loves to be the center of attention.
Yet, there is nothing shallow about Leo.
This sign is dedicated and loyal to a partner and is quite stable in relationships.
On the other hand, Leo will wither without enough attention and this can get tiring to some signs.
Virgo Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Pisces
Best Matches: Capricorn, Taurus, Cancer
Worst Matches: Aquarius, Leo, and Sagittarius
Virgo is a modest and hard-working sign, who desires to be of service.
This sign is a loyal and devoted partner.
Yet, Virgo is also famous for being a perfectionist and can have a bad habit of being overcritical of others.
Libra Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Aries
Best Matches: Leo, Aquarius, Gemini, and Pisces
Worst Matches: Scorpio, Cancer, and Capricorn
Relationships are the lifeblood of Libra.
The symbol for this sign is the scales, and Libra needs the balance of a partnership.
On the other hand, Libra is positively allergic to conflict and has an indirect communication style that can be baffling to other signs.
Scorpio Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Taurus
Best Matches: Pisces, Capricorn, and Cancer
Worst Matches: Sagittarius, Gemini, and Libra
Scorpio has a reputation for being passionate and excellent in the bedroom.
Yet, this sign is completely devoted to a partner and wants to connect on an emotional level as well as a physical one.
Scorpio has intense emotions and a tendency to become quite jealous.
Sagittarius Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Gemini
Best Matches: Aries, Leo, and Aquarius
Worst Matches: Scorpio, Taurus, Sagittarius, and Virgo
Sagittarius is pleasant, easy-going, and entertaining.
This sign has a great sense of humor and tends to be the life of a party.
When it comes to relationships, however, Sagittarius tends to shy away from commitments, valuing freedom above all other concerns.
Capricorn Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Cancer
Best Matches: Taurus, Virgo, and Scorpio
Worst Matches: Leo, Aries, and Libra
Capricorn is an ambitious and hard-working sign.
Natives of this sign take everything that they do seriously, including their relationships.
Capricorn is extremely practical, and in general, natives of this sign do not marry only for love.
Even so, Capricorn can be quite devoted and loving to a partner.
Aquarius Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Leo
Best Matches: Libra, Sagittarius, and Gemini
Worst Matches: Cancer, Virgo, Pisces, and Aquarius
Aquarius natives pride themselves on being individualistic and independent.
It can make Aquarius a long time to decide to enter into a relationship.
Once this sign does, however, Aquarius can be remarkably stable.
Aquarius does not compromise well, though, and can be quite stubborn.
Pisces Compatibility
Opposite Sign/Natural Partner: Virgo
Best Matches: Cancer, Scorpio, Virgo, Capricorn, and Libra
Worst Matches: Leo, Aquarius, and Gemini
Pisces is a deeply romantic sign, who is capable of extreme sacrifices on behalf of a loved one.
This sign is gentle, kind, and spiritual.
On the other hand, this sign can have some difficulties when it comes to the practicalities involved in sustaining a relationship.
Factors in Determining Zodiac Sign Compatibility
There is a long history of traditional wisdom regarding astrology and compatibility.
This wisdom is based on the wheel of the zodiac and the principles of numerology and Sacred Geometry.
Ptolemaic Aspects and Sacred Geometry
The first and most important consideration in zodiac sign compatibility is to determine whether there are any Ptolemaic aspects between the signs.
All of the signs of the zodiac are on a circle that is 360 degrees.
The signs are 12 equal divisions of that circle which occupy 30 degrees.
Other divisions can be made, and these are the Ptolemaic aspects.
Each of these aspects has a special significance when it comes to relationships.
The Conjunction
The first Ptolemaic aspect is the conjunction, which is based on Number 1.
This is a point, and it is the aspect of unity.
In a relationship, this is when the two people involved have the same zodiac sign.
This aspect is neutral.
It can be easy or it can be hard, based on the sign involved.
Each sign has different gifts and abilities, and some signs have a more difficult time with relationships than others.
The Opposition
The next aspect is the opposition, and it is based on the number 2.
In Sacred Geometry, 2 is a line, and it represents balance and polarity.
When you divide a circle into two, you get 180 degrees, and opposite signs are 180 degrees apart from one another.
The opposition is a special aspect when it comes to astrological compatibility and romantic relationships.
In theory, a romantic relationship in general, and marriage in particular, are based on balance and polarity.
Thus, opposite pairs are considered the natural partners for each other.
Even though this is true in theory, an opposition is a tense aspect between signs.
Even though they are each other’s natural partners, opposite pairs are not necessarily harmonious with each other.
The Trine
The most harmonious aspect between signs is the trine.
This aspect is based on the number 3.
Three is the number of divinity and is seen to have magical properties in many cultures.
In Sacred Geometry, 3 is the triangle and 3 points are required to form a plane.
Signs that are trine are 120 degrees apart from one another.
One special feature of signs that are trine one another is that they are all of the same element, meaning that they are of the same nature, Fire, Earth, Air, or Water.
When it comes to relationships, signs of the same element get along very well with each other.
They bring out the best in each other, and they moderate each other’s worst traits.
In general, zodiac signs that are trine have the highest compatibility with each other.
The Square
After 3 comes 4, and 4 is the number of the material world and its struggles.
It takes four points to make a tetrahedron, which is the simplest three-dimensional object.
The aspect that is based on 4 is the 90-degree angle, which is the square.
When it comes to astrological compatibility, signs that are square have a complicated relationship.
They share the same model, which is the way that signs approach change and how they get things done.
However, they do not have anything else in common.
On a practical level, signs that are square annoy each other.
Even so, there is a great deal of sexual chemistry between them.
There is a common story trope in which two people start off hating each other and eventually fall in love.
This trope represents how signs that are square interact.
The Sextile
The last Ptolemaic aspect is the sextile, which is based on the number 6.
These are signs that are 60 degrees apart.
This is a friendly pairing.
In horoscope compatibility, there are several different ways to categorize signs.
We have already talked about categorization by element and by mode.
One of the broader divisions is between the Day Signs and the Night Signs.
This is known as a sect.
Fire Signs and Air Signs are Day Signs, and they get along well with one another.
Earth and Water Signs are Night Signs, and they get along well.
Signs of the opposite sect have trouble with one another.
Signs that are sextile are not of the same element, but they are of the same sect.
They are not as harmonious as those that are trine, but they still enjoy each other’s company and make good matches.
Aversion
Signs that do not have a Ptolemaic aspect between them are considered Averse.
These are the signs that are adjacent to each other or to each other’s opposite sign.
With some exceptions that will be discussed below, averse signs have nothing in common, and they do not make good matches.
Mirror Relationships
In addition to Ptolemaic aspects, there are other relationships between signs that play a role in determining astrological compatibility.
There are two special relationships that are based on the relative length of daylight and nighttime when the Sun is in each of the signs.
The technical terms for them are antiscia and contra-antiscia, but they can be understood as mirror relationships.
The Cancer/Capricorn axis falls on the Solstices.
This means that signs that are mirror images two each other from the Cancer/Capricorn axis have the same relative length of daylight when the Sun is in these signs.
This gives them an understanding of each other that they otherwise would not have, and this is a relationship of equality.
The Aries/Libra axis falls on the Equinoxes.
When looking at the signs that are mirror images to each other along this axis, the length of daylight for one sign will be the same as the length of nighttime for the other.
These pairs also have an understanding of each other that they would not have otherwise, but this is usually an unequal relationship.
For purposes of zodiac sign compatibility, signs that have either of these mirror relationships with each other will be better matches than they ought to be.
Signs that Share a Ruler
In the traditional rulership system in astrology, the Sun ruled Leo and the Moon ruled Cancer.
The five other traditional planets, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn each ruled two signs a piece.
When looking at compatibility in astrology, signs that share a ruler will also get along better than they do otherwise.
The General Nature of Each Sign
While the discussion above may make it seems like horoscope compatibility is a dry, mathematical exercise, it is also important to consider the general nature of each sign.
Each of the signs behaves differently in the context of a relationship.
Some signs are naturally more volatile, others crave relationships and commitment, and still, others shy away from commitment.
It is important to take these qualitative factors into account when determining compatibility by zodiac sign.
Limits of Zodiac Sign Compatibility
While zodiac compatibility is a powerful tool in helping to determine whether two people are a good match, it has its limits.
The first of these limits is that people often only look at their Sun Signs.
Each person is unique, and there are many, many other considerations involved other than just the Sun Signs of the people involved.
The second is Free Will.
While some things in our lives are fated, many other things are within our power.
One of the things in our power is how we behave in our relationships.
If we decide to bring our best selves into a relationship and resolve to work through any problems, even highly difficult combinations can be successful.
If we do not, even the most compatible combinations can fail.
