May we embrace the depths of our compassion within our hearts. ~Thich Nhat Hanh

“I need to let the kids know that Mom is focusing,” I say to myself while tidying up after our meal. I propose a captivating activity to engage their attention. What is the total count of words that have their initial letter as ‘A’?

While examining the tiny fragments beneath the baseboard, I remain attentive enough to catch the faint sounds they create.

Mom, I have something important to tell you! (I must have dozed off.)

Correct. What does “L” stand for? And once more, they’re on their way. I believe it is important to increase one’s level of presence and mindfulness.

M…N…O…I chuckle quietly as we approach the letter P. P stands for pressure, I muse, as I mentally note the importance of printing out those tax papers tomorrow. Please contact the physician. And dispatch those electronic messages. And sign up for that training.

The fact that I am able to share this with you at this moment signifies genuine advancement. I am currently in the process of developing my ability to recognize and acknowledge the various pressures I experience. By carefully analyzing these pressures, I aim to minimize their impact whenever possible. I have faith in my capability to effectively address the legitimate concerns that fall within my sphere of influence.

However, prior to that, the sensation of pressure seemed quite ordinary. Essential indeed. In the past, I convinced myself that this was the epitome of discipline and motivation, as if I doubted my ability to accomplish meaningful tasks without feeling overwhelmed.

In recent years, I have found the courage to truly acknowledge and embrace the inner workings of my body and mind.

I acknowledge that the current situation is causing stress and it is not beneficial. I have come to understand that the way I think and act has the power to either increase stress or promote tranquility. At this moment, I genuinely hold the conviction that I possess the ability to determine the direction it takes, even in the absence of any other influence within my control.

I haven’t completely mastered the process yet. Not even close. However, I am now fully committed to giving it a sincere attempt.

Acknowledging the stress came effortlessly. The indications of trouble were unmistakable: a pounding head, a tightness in the body, a short temper, a constant unease, and an overwhelming weariness. I often find myself refusing to accept it or attempting to persevere despite the circumstances.

Acknowledging that my thoughts and behaviors could be exacerbating the situation proved to be somewhat challenging.

The pressures we experience often contain a nugget of truth, or perhaps even more. The source of pressure lies in the practical, day-to-day matters that are essential for maintaining a well-functioning life. It also stems from the underlying, more daunting challenges we encounter. A grave medical condition. Joblessness. Separation. Grief. Distress. Regardless of the situation, be it a mundane worry, a distressing incident, or a seemingly trivial concern, the weight of our emotions is undeniable. Our values, priorities, and expectations are revealed through the pressure we experience.

Nevertheless, based on my personal encounters and possibly yours as well, there exists a distinct form of pressure that originates from within oneself, or at the very least, is amplified internally. It is not fabricated or absurd, but as time passes, it can gradually lose touch with reality.

The constant hum of “what if” and “what will others think” echoes within me, shaping my inner voice. The reverberations reflect a culmination of ingrained thoughts and beliefs, yet in my present stage of adulthood, I find myself responsible for generating the majority of these messages.

This brings me to the most challenging aspect of selecting a path towards peace: making the decision.

Throughout my journey, I have shouldered numerous burdens, eagerly anticipating the moment when I would truly deserve to release them. The challenge lies in the absence of a referee or judge, where no one is tallying points. I possess the sole authority to grant myself permission for personal transformation, and it is within my power to decide between tranquility and stress.

When one’s existence is filled with a sense of stability, the tranquil route becomes readily apparent. It is directly within your line of sight. You are currently positioned on top of it! While I am present, I have the power to recite the most exquisite affirmations to myself, such as “It is within my control to choose between living in fear of pain or embracing love with unwavering dedication.” I have the power to release anything that no longer benefits me. I wholeheartedly embrace and affirm myself in every way, with utmost love and acceptance.”

However, in challenging or significant situations, or when something I deeply value is at stake, uncertainties may start to emerge.

Can I release my thoughts filled with pressure without any risks?

What if I require this level of pressure in order to achieve success?

Is it truly possible for me to embrace a slower pace and unwind, even with a multitude of tasks still awaiting completion?

Am I entitled to experience a sense of well-being at this moment? Do I deserve it? Once this is concluded, I will finally be able to carve out some much-needed personal time.

With each passing day, my consciousness of this journey intensifies, and my courage steadily increases. Courageous enough to rediscover my route to serenity.

I can’t help but feign surprise when it comes to the pressure. Following the significant medical consultation, subsequent to the matrimonial ceremony, subsequent to the somber memorial service, subsequent to the encounter with the extended family, subsequent to the yearly evaluation, a moment of profound clarity shall manifest. Experiencing its absence, I will perceive the extent of pressure I had been subjected to, as if encountering it for the very first time.

In that fleeting instant, just before the void is occupied by fresh elements, a sense of tranquility washes over me. In those fleeting moments, I find solace in the genuine connection and empathy I share with my inner self.

“I’ll mention how you experienced immense stress,” I’ll say. That burden seemed to be quite heavy on your mind. Naturally, you experienced a sense of pressure. I understand why you might have experienced confusion in that situation. I can understand why you felt so trapped. I understand, I understand. You seemed quite frightened.”

After expressing my readiness to embrace change, that all-too-familiar voice of criticism manages to creep its way back into my thoughts. However, I assumed that you would have moved on from this by now.

Stress.

The sources of pressure we experience can vary superficially. Increase your speed, accomplish more, and strive for excellence. Beneath the surface, they consistently revolve around identical inquiries:

What is my true identity?

Do I possess the necessary skills and qualities?

Do I deserve love and meaningful connections?

Is it possible for me to overcome this situation?

Even when we make an effort to show kindness towards ourselves, it’s common to unintentionally start doubting our value instead of acknowledging it. Let’s increase the level of pressure to move on from this situation. Instead of expressing, “I acknowledge that I’m experiencing pressure and I opt to embrace and wholeheartedly love myself amidst it,” it transforms into, “Oh, really?” Here we go again?”

In this place as well, I am acquiring the knowledge of selecting the tranquil route. I’ve come to realize that there is no point in berating oneself for feeling pressured, just as there is no benefit in downplaying or suppressing it.

I am discovering that embracing the path of tranquility involves transforming the entire approach into one rooted in empathy, rather than judgment. I am currently honing my skills in responding to questions with a more compassionate approach.

There is no need for you to inflict harm upon yourself in this manner.

The approach you choose for this is entirely up to you.

In this very moment, you have the power to embrace and fully accept yourself.

You have the option to select the most serene route in navigating this situation.

Pressure is an inevitable part of life. Pressure, discomfort, strain, anxiety, resistance—these are all inherent aspects of existence. The nature of life is such that it is constantly in motion, never remaining stagnant, even though this can sometimes be unsettling. Nevertheless, there is an alternative route that promotes tranquility.

Perhaps at this moment, you find yourself facing the weight of expectations to accomplish more tasks at a quicker pace. Or the burden of needing to be sure. To possess strength or attain perfection. Or perhaps even the necessity to alleviate the tension. The stress you feel can originate from within yourself or be influenced by the individuals and situations that surround you.

Irrespective of the magnitude of stress you may experience or its origin, you possess the ability to navigate it with tranquility by embracing your innate compassion.

Here’s the step-by-step process:

  1. Cultivate a state of mindfulness without attaching any judgments.
Discover your own unique indicators of early warning signs and begin to recognize those internal sensations as a form of pressure. Make sure to develop the skill of identifying it before it reaches its breaking point or immobilizes you, and sincerely assess whether it is truly beneficial. Begin by simply acknowledging the void it creates once it departs, even if that is the only action within your capacity. Take note of the sensation of pressure or relief, label it accurately, and acknowledge the influence it has on your daily experiences.
  2. Prove your worth.
When faced with pressure, it is important to acknowledge and validate your emotions by recognizing that you are currently experiencing pressure, and it is understandable to feel this way. And strive to affirm your own value. Simply expressing phrases such as “I am in the process of embracing my true self” can have a significant impact in alleviating the burden.
  3. Explore beyond what meets the eye.
After acknowledging that you are experiencing pressure and providing yourself with validation, it is important to delve deeper into the situation and understand what is truly happening. Approach yourself with a genuine blend of honesty and compassion while you pose inquiries that aid in comprehending your current circumstances.

What experiences a sense of danger? Who is having an impact on your decisions and choices? Are you possibly exaggerating this? What could assist in alleviating the stress you’re experiencing? What is one aspect that you have the power to influence? What aspects of discovering a peaceful resolution frighten you?

  1. Embrace novel ideas and behaviors until they become your everyday routine.
Remind yourself of the advice you would offer to a cherished companion who is feeling overwhelmed. Take a moment to recall your authentic priorities, your unique strengths, and the array of choices available to you. Reflect on the reasons that motivate you to embrace a path of tranquility. Continue to repeat the process repeatedly, without ceasing, until the words no longer sound unfamiliar.

Next, work on developing the bravery to take action from that mindset, even if you still have some doubts. The action may need to precede belief.

Embrace the notion of feeling secure in being yourself, finding happiness, and opting for peace. Remove one item from the schedule. Request an extension for a deadline. Take on a minor task and relish the satisfaction of checking it off your agenda. Embark on a leisurely stroll and allow yourself to be filled with a sense of wonder. In all your endeavors, keep in mind that true courage lies not in grand gestures or audacious acts, but in embracing your genuine self.

Approach these steps with a mindset of compassion and regard each instance of pressure resurfacing, as it inevitably will, as an opportunity to reaffirm your dedication to discovering the most serene path forward.

“Your MASTERY OF LIFE begins the moment you break through your prisons of self-created limitations and enter the inner worlds where creation begins.”
