Words have magic and the ability to shape our reality, yet we seldom give them the power they deserve. However, the majority of us treat this magic as if it were weak.

One obvious example is that we have a hard time keeping our promise to ourselves.

Don Miguel Ruiz lists “Be impeccable with your word” as the first and most crucial agreement in his life-altering book, The Four Agreements. The agreement, “Be impeccable with your word,” is much more nuanced than it seems at first glance… However, I will just address one facet of that: keeping your promise to yourself.

Dishonoring our promise to oneself might manifest in several ways:

  • Our hectic schedules force us to put off exercising even if we claim we will.
  • We make a pact to cut down on sugar, only to relapse the next day and devour a mountain of cookies and ice cream.
  • Months pass after we announce our intention to embark on a significant project, yet each day passes without any progress.
  • Despite our best intentions, we end ourselves checking our phones or emails instead of meditating.

We are being unfair to ourselves if we call any of this “bad.” It is not awful at all. On the other hand, what if we really started keeping our promises to ourselves?

What if we really did what we said we would do when we made a commitment to ourselves?

If something were to happen, how would your life be different?

Everything might shift if you had complete faith in your ability to keep your pledge to yourself.

Come with me as I explore ways to strengthen the impact of my own words.

Keeping Our Promises to Ourselves

To begin, make a solemn vow to yourself to always keep your word. It’s a solemn promise, and when you make it, you mean it.

Every time you feel like breaking your promise to yourself, just remind yourself of this.

Then, to get a head start, promise yourself little tasks you know you can do. And repeat after me, with unwavering dedication, every single vow.

As an example, you may say you’re going to get a glass of water and really go get one. Please respond to this one email as promised. Do what you say you’re going to do and go for a stroll around the block. Keep the little pledges you make.

Take the option of not doing it away. As far as my coach is concerned, being a parent is a commitment you make without ever questioning, and that includes whether or not you will feed your children. Maintain the same level of unwavering dedication to your self-commitments.

Acknowledge to yourself that you have kept your promise when you accomplish it. Let us rejoice in this triumph. A little triumph is still a victory.

Acknowledge the error and apologize if you fail to live up to your promise. Own up to your actions, guilt-free. Next, resolve to learn and improve as a result of this error.

Before moving on to more challenging promises, be sure you’re competent at the easier ones. Make a more reasonable commitment, like 5 or 10 minutes, to write rather than an hour. Do not waste time attempting to meditate for an hour; even five minutes will do. The same goes for physical activity and other tasks that demand concentration. Excellent fulfillment of modest commitments.

Don’t make promises that you can’t keep, like swearing off drinking forever. Make little commitments, like saying you won’t have a cookie for the next hour. After that, eliminate the cookies or at least relocate away from where they are located to make the promises simpler to keep.

If you put in the effort to strengthen the impact of your words, they will eventually become second nature. When you’ve mastered the art of verbal magic, your word will be as potent as any spell you’ve ever cast.

“Your MASTERY OF LIFE begins the moment you break through your prisons of self-created limitations and enter the inner worlds where creation begins.”
