Are you a victim of your circumstances or a creator of your own destiny?

In everyday language, the phrases “fate” and “destiny” are often confused with one another and used interchangeably. People often say things like, “He must have met his fate” or “It must be her destiny,” but have you ever stopped to consider what the real distinctions are between these two concepts?

If you’re curious about the direction your life is taking, I hope that by the time you reach the conclusion of this essay, you’ll have a better idea of where you stand.

What Exactly is “Fate”?

The English term “fate” originates from the Latin word “fatum,” which may be translated as “that which has been said.” As a result, throughout the course of human history, the concept of destiny has become synonymous with the aspects of our lives that have been predestined. The idea that there is a natural order to the universe, which cannot be altered no matter how hard we strive, is the foundation of the concept of fate. Even the ancient Greeks and Romans thought that a person’s final life path was predetermined by three goddesses known as Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, also known as the “Three Fates.”

In general, one should approach the concept of destiny with a pessimistic attitude. For instance, those who go through difficult times are more likely to attribute their problems to the hand of destiny. A number of pessimistic expressions, such as “to seal one’s destiny” and “a fate worse than death,” give the impression that fate is something unpleasant and unfavorable.

On a spiritual level, fate is what happens when we disregard the life calling that has been given to us and do not make an effort to reestablish a connection with our souls or our true nature. When we give other people and external events the power to determine the course of our lives, we are essentially ceding control of our own lives to the randomness of chance. What happens to us when we don’t make any efforts to intentionally change and evolve is predetermined by destiny.

What Exactly is “Destiny”?

The word “fate” has a considerably more negative connotation than the word “destiny.” The English term “destiny” comes from the Latin word “destinare,” which means “that which has been firmly established.” Even if this meaning also alludes to the concept of things happening in a predefined order, destiny is something that can be actively shaped and changed by each of us. Destiny, in contrast to fate, includes a measure of free will on the part of its participants. It is possible to alter your course of events by cultivating traits such as bravery, compassion, determination, and patience.

From a spiritual perspective, our final life path is intricately tied to our destiny. When we make the decision to stand up and take responsibility for our lives, we are actively crafting our destiny rather than passively allowing fate to determine the course of our lives. To live a life that is in alignment with our purpose, we need to intentionally cultivate a connection to the most fundamental aspects of our being and grow older on an intellectual, emotional, and spiritual level.

The Difference Between Fate and Destiny (Summarized)

What cannot be altered is referred to as one’s fate. What you are destined to do in this life is your destiny. While fate is what occurs when you don’t take responsibility for your life, destiny is what happens when you commit to developing, learning, and taking risks. Fate is what happens when you don’t take responsibility for your life. Being “destined for greatness” is something that can only be achieved via deliberate action and thought. However, destiny is what occurs when you let other people and external circumstances decide the course of your life.

Are We in Control of This?

Both fate and destiny may be thought of as being aspects of the same thing since they are both things that are predestined. But the most essential thing to keep in mind is that there are many opportunities out there in the world. Realizing our potential and living up to our potential requires us to intentionally steer the current of our lives in a certain direction. The idea of “me” and “you” does not exist, hence there is no such thing as control or choice, even if this may imply that we do have control and choice when seen from the perspective of the ego, which is a subjective perspective (except in the mind).

Therefore, the answer to the question “Do we have control?” is contradictory: “yes” and “no,” meaning that we do and do not have control. However, while we are still functioning on the level of having a feeling of self (ego), it is imperative that we actively endeavor to step up and take responsibility for our own destinies. This is the only way we will be able to go beyond the level of having a sense of self.

The Path to Realizing Your Destiny

As long as you have the intention to educate and develop yourself, as well as advance your spirituality, you will be fulfilling your destiny. On the other hand, if you want to accomplish all that is possible for you, the following advice may be helpful to you:

  • Develop self-understanding. There is an abundance of free material available, even on this very page, that may assist you in developing a deeper understanding of who you are. Our section on free exams is an excellent place to get started.
  • Figure out what it is that you have a strong interest in. What ignites the passion inside you? What gives you a sense of excitement and thrill? What are some things that you look up to and really love doing? Be careful to keep doing whatever brings you joy and satisfaction.
  • Put yourself in the company of individuals who will encourage and uplift you. People who criticize and judge us often cause us to experience significant levels of self-doubt. Sometimes we truly listen to the unsupportive individuals in our lives who try to teach us how to “live our lives,” which ultimately leads to us selecting the incorrect course of action in our life. Find the individuals in your life that are a bad influence and try to get rid of them or at least spend less time with them. Find some buddies who are kind, encouraging, and understanding.
  • Give yourself permission to start venturing outside of your comfort zone. When we take risks in life, we often bring about the most significant changes. There are times when realizing your destiny requires you to put yourself in situations that are a little bit awkward or even take a terrible leap of faith. In any event, make it a point to pay attention to your gut instinct while also using rationality when it is appropriate.
  • Identify your limiting beliefs. When we give credence to our ideas, we give rise to a variety of negative emotions, including rage, uncertainty, grief, humiliation, and worry. When it comes to attempting to live out one’s destiny, the most significant obstacle that the majority of individuals face is their underlying beliefs. The primary notions that we hold about ourselves and that we have been socialized to believe from birth are referred to as core beliefs. Beliefs such as “I am undeserving,” “I am dumb,” “I am a nasty person,” and “I do not deserve happiness” are among the most prevalent fundamental beliefs. Learn more about these fundamental ideas by reading on.
  • Make an effort to get support from other people. You don’t have to go through this path by yourself if you don’t want to. If you are in need of some direction, you should seek the assistance of a loved one, a counselor, or a spiritual teacher. People who have been in your shoes before and traversed this road may impart a wealth of knowledge that will be of great use to you. When I am in need of assistance, one of my favorite things to do is to recite a little prayer in which I beg for direction. It is not necessary to be religious in order to pray; you may pray to anything that moves you, including life, the universe, spirit, or the Mystery.
  • Create a list of all of the things that you do well. Your energy may be directed in a manner that is more useful and sustainable with the aid of this simple technique.
  • Keep in mind that experiencing setbacks is quite natural. There is no such thing as failure; there are just possibilities for growth and improvement. Take a few slow, deep breaths and remember that sometimes life forces us to walk on a different path. This is something to keep in mind the next time things don’t go the way you planned.
  • Establish your objectives. Your goals should be well-defined landmarks that may assist you in becoming organized and prioritizing the aspects of your life that are most important to you.
  • Be nice to yourself first and foremost. You are naturally going closer to your ultimate destiny the more love and compassion you exhibit towards yourself. This is because your ultimate destiny is a reflection of who you are. Be conscious of critical and negative ideas, and let them flow through your mind without attaching yourself to them.
  • Just be who you are. There has never been another person on the face of this planet who is an identical replica of you at any point in time. Explore what comes most easily to you rather than trying to imitate the styles of other people. There are far too many individuals in the world who imitate the actions of others. Just be who you are. Discover your own sense of style. Take pleasure in the tranquility that comes from not having to pretend to be someone you’re not.
  • Put it this way: “If I could have anything in life, what would it be?” And focus on absolutely everything you do on working towards achieving that objective. Do you want independence, mental tranquility, and romantic love? When everything is taken into account, it may all be boiled down to one thing: the need for happiness. Keep in mind, though, that the pursuit of pleasure actually results in more pain. Happiness is only ever found in this very moment, in the here and now; it can never be discovered in the past or the future. As a result, if you want to further narrow the topic, you could want to ask yourself, “How can I appreciate life right now, in the current moment?”
